Microcom Inc, Norwood, Massachusetts has added another link to its Microcom LAN Bridge family. Using a V.32 modem and data compression, the new MLB/1200 bridge is designed to provide a transparent link between IEEE 802.3 Ethernet or IEEE 802.5 Token Ring nets over dial-up telephone lines at transmission rates up to 30,000bps. The new bridge is pitched at users who want to connect dispersed local area networks but are put off by the expense of leasing private data circuits. The Microcom LAN Bridge is a self-contained communications processor with three functional parts: first, the wide area network module controls the telephone line link between the bridges and provides error correction; second, the local network interface module handles the packet traffic on the network and passes packets to the bridge management module; and third, the bridge management module manages the establishment of dial-up connections, keeps track of all network statistics and and controls the general operation of the system. Priced at $7,000, the MLB/1200 will be available at the beginning of December in the US.
