Chatsworth, California-based disk drive maker Micropolis Corp is shipping two high performance, high capacity 3.5 AT/IDE Winchester disk drives. The Model 2112A has a formatted capacity of 1.05Gb, the model 2105A, 560Mb. Both drives spin disks at 5,400rpm, compared with 3,600rpm for most 3.5 drives. The higher speed reduces latency, providing faster data access while also increasing the drive’s data transfer rate. Both drives feature a 10mS average seek time, the highest performance specifications – Micropolis claims – of any drive in this class. The on-board IDE controller supports high speed data transfer rates of up to 5M-bytes per second. The Model 2112A enables the user to create a single physical and logical drive under MS-DOS so that the full capacity of the disk can be used without restricting volume size. The 2112A’s 10mS seek time is achieved using patented observer based digital servo technology, which, Micropolis says, gives pinpoint positioner control without the inflexibility of traditional embedded servo technology. Both drives are also available with a Fast SCSI-2 interface and a 512Kb cache buffer. Both the new models are available now in evaluation quantities with volume set for next quarter. The list price for the 2112A is $2,720, for the 2105A, $1,625.
