In an effort to bring better discipline and a keener focus to its applications development, Microsoft Corp, Redmond, Washington is restructuring its Applications Division into five business units, each with an assigned product mission and responsibility for its products from conception and development through introduction and on-going marketing, in the hope that a small company attitude will be engendered in each. The five are the Office Business Unit for Microsoft Word and Mail; Graphics, including Microsoft PowerPoint; Entry, for Microsoft Works, Learning DOS and Flight Simulator; Data Access including Microsoft File and QuickBasic; and Analysis, including Excel, Project and Multiplan. In addition, a new Development Support unit will manage the procedures and tools, libraries, computer-based training development and test tools, and the company has also created a new director of User Interface Architecture.
