Microsoft Corp confirmed on Friday it will start competing directly with Apple Computer Inc’s iPod and iTunes music offerings, with a project it calls Zune.
Chris Stephenson, Microsoft’s head of marketing for MSN, confirmed the rumors to Billboard magazine. The company launched a teaser site, comingzune.com. Reports elsewhere put the estimated ship date as some time around October.
Apple has about three quarters of the market for digital music at the moment, so Microsoft will have its work cut out to catch up.
