Mexico’s Communications Ministry is studying a proposal to unite six investment groups to form one rival to compete against national telephone monopoly Telefonos de Mexico SA, according to the Reforma newspaper, which quoted Gustavo de la Garza, director of one of the known six investment groups vying to enter into long distance competition with Telmex, as saying the ministry is seriously considering a proposal to offer one competing concession to a combined investor group; Telmex’s monopoly on long distance service will be lifted on January 1 1997 and six investment groups have announced plans to compete in the market where there are only eight telephone lines per 100 residents; the six include the Grupo Radio Beep, if anyone can take a company with such a name seriously, plus the Motorola Inc team, an MCI Communications Inc team, the Mexican cellular company Grupo Iusacell SA where Bell Atlantic Corp has 23% and options on another 23%; and Monterrey-based Grupo Industrial Alfa SA plans $1,000m in investments in telecommunications ventures with an unnamed partner, while Grupo Domos International SA completes the list.
