A group of manufacturers led by Epilogue Technology Corp and Xircom Inc has formed the Mobile Management Task Force with the aim of developing extensions to the Simple Network Management Protocol standard that address the needs of mobile users. The group was born out of the joint Xircom and Epilogue plan to develop a Management Information Base for mobile management, announced last March. Xircom vice-president of product development Jim Soriano said that after the specification was developed, It became clear that the scope of this [mobile management] problem extended well beyond a single MIB proposal. The task force’s plans are still at a fairly early stage: initially, the group will concentrate on finalising the mobile management protocol, which will then be submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force for consideration as a standard. The next project is expected to be a Wireless Network Management Information Base, and the group said that it will then identify other potential network management standards that benefit those who manage mobile computer users. The group is at pains to emphasise it is not intended to be a standards-making body, but rather it wants to act as a forum: We have no intention of duplicating the work of the Internet Engineering Task Force, the Desktop Management Task Force, or other groups, said Russ Sharer, director of corporate access products at Xircom.
