IBM Corp is now cutting jobs in areas targeted for growth, such as the RS/6000 and the services arm, as well as in the moribund mainframe business: it gave lay-off notices late last week to a total of 625 employees, and told workers in its mainframe factories that 1,200 will soon be given pink slips too – most of these cuts will be in Poughkeepsie, but plants in Kingston and Endicott, all New York state, may also be affected; of the slips handed out last week, about 225 went to workers in the microelectronics division in Endicott; about 200 lost their jobs at Integrated Systems Solutions Corp in the Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Endicott, and Fishkill plants, and about 150 employees of the division that makes and sells the RS/6000 in Austin and Kingston got their cards.
