NEC (UK) says the two Intel 386SX-based machines announced in the US last month (CI No 1,010) will be available for sampling here in October with volume shipments starting November: the 2Mb RAM, 16MHz PowerMate SX desktop comes with a choice of 1.2Mb 5.25 or 1.44Mb 3.5 floppy, a 42Mb 3.5 hard disk and VGA graphics, runs SCO Xenix 386 as well as MS-DOS 3.3 and MS-OS/2 Standard Edition and costs UKP2,900 – a complete system with NEC’s MultiSync II colour monitor supporting graphics up to 800×600 is priced at UKP3,500; the PowerMate Portable SX has a similar configuration and comes with NEC’s 640 by 480 resolution gas plasma screen which supports VGA applications through a 16-level grey scale; three expansion slots accept network and communications interfaces, the portable is UKP4,000 and includes an introductory bundle of Microsoft Windows/386.
