The New York Times has been focusing on Rick Thompson, the man that runs Microsoft Corp’s almost unnoticed hardware business, which designs the company’s mice, keyboards and joysticks and gets them made in Taiwan or Malaysia, Mexico or China, even Japan. Separate it from the rest of Microsoft and you find that it’s a $370m business with just 111 staff, which means they generate a red-hot $3.3m each.
