Nippon DEC has just followed its US parent in announcing figures for the year to June, and in contrast to the performance of the company overall, profits have been hard to win in Japan – they plunged 17% to $76m on sales up 17% at $409m: the fall in profits was down to a decline in its traditional manufacturing market, but sales lost there were more than compensated for by hard-won new business in financial markets, and continued demand for the VAX for general business applications.
