Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp warns that it expects pre-tax profits to plunge to just $18.7m in the second half of this fiscal year, compared with $1,337m in the same period last year: it blames increased costs and cuts in long distance call rates to meet competition from the three newcomers – Unless we can get government permission to raise local call rates, we could slip into the red in the next business year to March 1995, president Masashi Kojima warned.
