Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp has developed a subscriber microwave system for use in Integrated Services Digital Networks in place of fibre optic cable: the national phone company claims the system enables data and speech to be transmitted between access points on the dial-up network without cables: transmission rate is around 8Mbits-per-second so it can be used with the existing INS Network 64, and the planned INS 1500 system; the subscriber needs a 1.2 metre dish, a sending and receiving unit and a signal processing unit, and use of the system will enable NTT to install optical fibre in areas of high population density, and microwave where there are only a few subscribers.
