Less than a week after the formation of the ODF Alliance to promote the use of the OpenDocument Format by local and national government organizations, the Oasis standards group has formed the ODF Adoption Committee to do the same for business users and software vendors.
Oasis approved the adoption of the OpenDocument format for office applications as an official Oasis standard in May 2005 and has followed that up with the formation of the ODF Adoption Committee, which will work closely with the technical committee to align market-based requirements and help guide further enhancements.
It will also educate the marketplace on the value of the ODF via white papers, FAQs, documents, case studies, and educational materials, and will include representatives of IBM Corp, Sun Microsystems Inc, and Novell Inc, as well as the National Informatics Center of the Government of India and the Netherlands Tax and Customs Administration.
Sun, IBM, and Novell are also members of the ODF Alliance, along with industry groups such as the American Library Association, the Software & Information Industry Association, and the Open Society Archives of the Central European University.
The ODF Alliance was set up to focus attention and avoid duplication of effort when lobbying local and central government organizations on the potential use of ODF.
