To try to boost its UK profile, Olicom A/S, the Danish company that just went public in the US, in which Ing C Olivetti & Co SpA is a substantial shareholder, has announced a new Master Reseller programme in conjunction with its distributor Frontline Distribution Ltd, and improved margins to resellers of up to 15%. The new programme is aimed at value added resellers and systems integrators of Token Ring, internetworking, and intelligent wiring system products. The plan is that candidates – to be jointly selected by Olicom and Frontline – will pay for their flight to Denmark for a three-day training course at Olicom’s headquarters in Copenhagen, with Olicom footing the bill for the other expenses. Alongside this announcement, Olicom has also launched several new products, including what is claimed to be the fastest Token Ring local bridge available. It is called the Wire Speed Local Bridge 16/4, and Olicom says it has an operating speed of 27,600 frames per second, regardless of the size of the frame. The company says that it optimised performance by lowering the work-load of the Texas Instruments Inc chip set through a Media Access Controller, and by storing and passing on data directly without copying it to a second chip set within the bridge. As well as supporting network management systems including LAN Manager, LAN Network Manager and NetView, the product is Simple Network Management Protocol-compliant. It is available immediately at UKP3,800. Also launched is a 32-bit EISA 16/4 Token Ring server adaptor with on-board shielded and unshielded twisted pair support: up to eight adaptors can be installed on each server. The company claims that the product is compatible with all major operating systems including Novell Inc NetWare, Microsoft Corp LAN Manager, and IBM Corp LAN Server. List price is UKP3,800. Also launched is a new Multistation Access Unit intended to provide low-cost support for Token Ring networks using unshielded twisted pair cabling. The unit allows for the connection of up to eight nodes on a Token Ring network – although more than one unit can be cascaded – and is compliant with the IEEE 802.5 standard. Supporting both 4Mbps and 16Mbps networks, it has a list price of UKP440.
