In a cryptic announcement, National Semiconductor Corp says it has been awarded an $85m three-year contract to build and operate a semiconductor plant on behalf of the Maryland Procurement Office arm of the US Defense Department. The plant is in addition to the Pentagon’s contribution to the Sematech semiconductor capital equipment development and proving co- operative, but no further details were given. The low value of the contract by comparison with the cost of a new volume chip plant indicates that it is to fabricate only short-run circuits.
