Rhyl, North Wales-based Pinacl Products Ltd, formerly part of Pilkington Plc until a demerger last September, has launched Unitex, a loose tube internal and external fibre optic cable. By eliminating the need for both internal and external cabling types, as well as the need for splice boxes and splicing when the cable enters the building, cabling costs can be reduced by up to 22% using Unitex, says the company. The product comes with one to 12 individually coloured 250 micron fibres contained a central polymeric buffer tube, 3mm in diameter, and strengthened with aramis yarns. The central part of the tube is wrapped in kevlar and oversheathed with polypropylene. There is a final layer of LSZH compound, said to have mechanical and water resistance properties. The whole is claimed to be able to withstand tensions of up to 1,000 Newtons – and it is available now across Europe.
