With competition in web portal space continuing to be ferocious, Lycos Inc and Goto.com have boasted of their results in the latest Media Metrix/Relevant Knowledge reports. Lycos says its audience reach has climbed to 27.8 million visitors, putting it in second place behind Yahoo. The company has every intention of replacing Yahoo as number one. Spending the year buying web properties has done Lycos’ audience figures no harm. Its network now includes the popular web community sites Tripod.com and Angelfire.com, free web-based email provider MailCity.com, email directory WhoWhere.com, rival search engine HotBot.com and other Wired Digital properties, as well as Lycos.com itself. The company claims its national advertising campaign also contributed to its increase in traffic. Meanwhile GoTo.com, which was launched in June, is crowing over having become the 24th most visited site on the web. GoTo also gleefully pointed out that the number of unique visitors to all three leading sites, Yahoo, Lycos and Excite, dropped in real terms. Media Metrix and Relevant Knowledge, which merged in October (CI No 3,515), have not released the report for general view.
