Shipments of personal computers worldwide rose 16.3% in the third quarter from a year earlier according to Dataquest Inc, which says that Toshiba Corp nearly doubled its shipments and posted the fastest growth among top vendors. Apple Computer Inc lost substantial ground, while its preliminary third-quarter data showed that Compaq Computer Corp remained the world’s dominant supplier with IBM Corp in second place. Dataquest said the world market was on track to grow 19.7% this year, after its record 24.7% growth recorded last.
