Radware Ltd, a company carving itself out a position as a supplier of a hardware and software suite for application availability, performance optimization, and network security, has announced SecureFlow which is being described as an “intelligent switch” that will optimize traffic across installed anti-virus, content inspection, intrusion-prevention, and firewall security tools.
The new unified security management tool, which succeeds Radware’s FireProof line and will become available toward the end of the year, forms another piece in Radware’s recently launched APSolute suite, and will run the same operating system and share the common architecture and management as others in the portfolio.
Radware’s system is not only designed for optimized throughput in several ways, the UK general manager, Steve Withers said. APSolute uses high-speed hardware that handles throughputs of 3 to 6 Gbps, but by overlaying the use of smart software on top the system allows for deep packet inspection at line rates, he said. The vendor sees an emerging role for such devices because application protocols and web service constructs are not being developed in ways that they are optimized for network performance.
Withers said that unlike a typical router that will inspect traffic at Layer 3, the intelligent application switches developed by Radware work at Layers 4 to 6, allowing it to pick up on session IDs, protocol types, the type of application being used, or the sender or recipient identities, and will direct traffic accordingly.
The company competes on several different fronts with different market competitors. For application-aware IPS, it rivals products from McAfee or Tipping Point, in the load-balancing sector it faces F5 and ISS, and pitches against Packeteer in the field of bandwidth management.
There are a number of point products out there, but the way they are implemented means that they are usually run in series, said Withers. The traffic passes through a firewall, goes on into intrusion detection, anti-spam, anti-virus and so on. APSolute deals with traffic at a much more sensible level to determine how it is best optimized.
