Digital media specialist RealNetworks has expanded its presence into the casual games market with the acquisition of Zylom Media Group, a Dutch developer and publisher of PC games throughout Europe.
Zylom will add a portfolio of around 70 casual games to RealNetworks’ existing product library and help the company position itself against market leaders Microsoft, EA and Google.
Casual games include puzzle titles like Tetris and are often modeled on traditional card games such as Solitaire. In contrast to videogames which usually require the latest PC hardware and are dominated by young males, casual games are playable on even basic machines and it is estimated that 70% of all customers are woman.
The casual games market is thought to be a high growth area and has recently attracted the attentions of major players such as Disney, Yahoo and EA. With an established internet presence already, it will be interesting to see how RealNetworks develops this new business area.
