RealNetworks has announced deals with both the Santa Cruz Operation and Digital Equipment Corp that push its RealSystem streaming media products further into the Unix world. The deal with SCO will see RealSystem 5.0, including RealServer, RealPlayer and RealEncoder, ported to UnixWare 7 and RealServer and RealPlayer ported to SCO OpenServer Release 5 systems. RealNetworks says the agreement makes SCO the first operating system supplier to integrate its technology into an OS. The two say they will also work together to optimize the performance of streaming media on the SCO platforms. In a similar agreement, DEC is tying up with RealNetworks to make streaming media products available on Digital Unix for Alpha-based workstations and servers. The announcements follow a similar agreement with Sun Microsystems Inc in January that put RealNetworks technology onto Sun’s Solaris platform. No information was given on how soon we could expect the technology to make its debut on either the SCO or DEC platforms.
