SD , the government, defence and aerospace arm of the merged software group SD-Scicon Plc , launched its Police Information Management System at the International Police Exhibition and Conference in London last week: based on DEC VAX VMS computers using DECnet networking software and X25, it provides a common architecture which allows different forces to be linked together; the system – elements of which are used in the Crime Report Information System developed by SD for the Metropolitan Police (CI No 752) – uses the Ingres relational database management system which can support centralised or distributed crime report databases and may also be extended to support other applications including fingerprint and facial recognition systems, expert systems applications and criminal information systems.
