The hopes of the Sematech chip manufacturing co-operative getting off the ground with $100m of Department of Defense funding for fiscal 1988, which started in September, have been dashed by the hard-fought cuts in the US budget – $75,000m over two years that were announced by President Reagan on Friday. Cash for Sematech is reduced to $25m.
