The Franco-Italian chipmaker SGS Thomson Microelectronics NV announced that it has put in place a substantial increase in its production capacity for Flash memory chips with particular emphasis on the 2M-bit and 4M-bit devices. Last quarter it started production of Flash chips at a second fab in Agrate, near Milan, close to its main Flash fab, and it is also qualifying a new 8 fab in Catania, Sicily, and says it will begin volume production of Flash chips during the second half of the year.
