SGS-Thomson Microelectronics BV is looking for a way into the Japanese market, perhaps via a joint venture similar to the Motorola-Toshiba alliance – and Oki Electric could be a partner given existing links with the Franco-Italian firm; the chipmaker looks to break even at the operating level for its first full year of operations, but restructuring costs will result in a net loss on sales of a little over $1,000m.
