One of the jollier items to come out of last week’s British Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Belfast last week, quoted in the Daily Telegraph, came from Dr Frank Owens, who is researching speech recognition at the Un-iversity of Ulster at Jordanstown: Dr Owens was puzzled by the fact that whenever he sneezed, his computer tried to telephone Washington – then I understood, he says to a machine, the word ‘Washington’ can sound exactly like a sneeze.
