YouTube to offer subscription-based music service

YouTube is planning to launch YouTube Music Key, a paid monthly subscription service, in the coming months.

YouTube head of content and business operations Robert Kyncl has confirmed the media report at the Code/Media conference where he also highlighted that the beta version of the service is already being tested.

Reuters cited Kyncl as saying: "There is a subset of audience who wants more things so they are used to paying for those.

"We don’t think it changes anything for existing users."

Presently, the website attracts more than 1 billion users a month and the videos are accompanied by short commercials.

According to reports, the upcoming service will be ad-free and is likely to include exclusive content that can be viewed offline.

YouTube’s parent company Google said back in November that it will charge $7.99 per month for the ad-free service which will be available offline even when other apps are working.

In May 2013, the platform launched the trial version of its paid subscription service for a small group of partners.

The subscribers were able to access the channels using their computer, phone, tablet or TV, to view different content, including TV shows and films.
