Storage Technology Corp is satisfied that it will be able to maintain 100% compatibility with IBM’s enhanced 3480 tape cartridge subsystem for its own 4480 system following IBM’s enhancements last month (CI No 1,024): it says that 4.5Mbyte-per second channel support already has been installed in customer sites and that the 4Mb buffer is set for the fourth quarter 1988; the Longmont, Colorado company also cut prices, and the 4480-M20 Control Unit is now $56,930; the 4480-M22 Drive is $39,840 and the 4480-M24 Drive is reduced to $79,680; StorageTek’s offering of increased cartridge capacity will be available within 12 months of availability of the feature on the IBM 3480.
