Seeking an edge over IBM’s current offerings while the whole world waits for the long-delayed faster channels and higher capacities, Storage Technology Corp has introduced two enhanced models in its 8380 family of 3380-compatible disk drives. The new 8380P is a single-capacity 2.5Gb drive that is claimed to improve seek time an average 17%: it will be available in the fourth quarter at $65,000. The new 8380R is a compact-package 16-actuator disk subsystem with 10.8Gb to 20.16Gb of capacity with 50% saving in floorspace. It costs $360,000 with 20Gb from first quarter 1988.
