STSC Europe has launched APL*PLUS Network Sharefile, an add-on option for VM and MVS-based mainframes: the VM version uses IBM’s Transparent System Access Facility to provide access to Sharefile servers on any central processing unit under VM; under VM/SP Release 6 or VM/ESA, Advanced Program to Program Communication for personal computers allows the use of VTAM to communicate between systems; APL is notorious for its consumption of resources, and STSC says that for users facing CPU constraints, the new product enables CPU-intensive applications to be offloaded while retaining access to the Sharefile data; Sharefile provides compatibility with both VS APL and APL2 as well as an interface to user programs written in other languages.
