Extends defence against Web 2.0 threats
Symantec has added Web Gateway 4.5 to its Protection Suite Enterprise Edition. The new web security appliance reportedly provides multiple layers of anti-malware technologies including its antivirus engine to protect customers against botnets and Web 2.0 threats. The move comes as part of its ongoing integration with Mi5 Networks following its acquisition in April.
According to Symantec, the new Web Gateway is backed by its Global Intelligence Network, which is comprised of databases that collect information from around the world to identify emerging threats and develop defences.
The company said that the new appliance gives Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition customers a real-time inspection engine that scans inbound and outbound traffic on-the-fly with zero latency and eliminates the delays associated with proxy-based architectures.
Reportedly, on top of real-time traffic inspection, it adds multi-layer defence for protection against inappropriate or malicious sites, active content, application file downloads and phone-home traffic.
According to the Symantec Internet Security Threat Report Volume XIV, during 2008, 63% of all vulnerabilities affected web applications, an increase of nearly 60% over the previous year.
Francis deSouza, senior vice president of enterprise security group at Symantec, said: The combination of Web Gateway with our endpoint security, messaging security and system recovery technologies in one suite gives administrators comprehensive protection with much greater manageability.
“Symantec Protection Suite also reduces the costs of securing a customer’s environment so that they can focus on effectively managing those risks that are inherent to their IT infrastructure.
