Symantec Corp has decided to get out of the security appliance game, and will instead start looking for OEM partners to build hardware for it, the company has revealed.
Symantec has reportedly laid off about 80 people in connection with the strategy shift.
Symantec will continue to develop the key content technologies that these appliances leverage, a company spokesperson said in a statement. However… We will pursue a different hardware solution – instead of designing the hardware ourselves, we’ll look to partners to help us do that.
Development of the Symantec Gateway Security, Symantec Network Security 7000 and SGS Advanced Manager 3.0 boxes are to be phased out. The company will, however, continue to support and sell the products for the time being.
