Enterprise mobility firm Symbol Technologies will be embedding IBM’s WebSphere RFID infrastructure in its readers, to create an intelligent RFID scanner which will automate the process of routing and managing incoming data from tags.
The unified device will be able to reduce network traffic by filtering incoming data and sending only pertinent information to a company’s application server. The companies were also keen to point out that the device could be easily integrated with other modern warehousing devices, such as motion sensors, and so could be used to automatically activate business processes in supply and logistics chains.
IBM said that the system went beyond simple management functions. In one example, the company suggested that information disseminated by the reader could be used by its software to analyze trends in the supply chain, locating points of inefficiency which could then be addressed by the system manager.
