Output by Taiwan’s information industry expanded 29% in the first half of 1996 and the total value of the output of computers, monitors, motherboards and related products rose to $10,970m in the first six months of 1996, the Institute for Information Industry said. Laptop output grew 67% in the first six months to $2,100m. Output for the year will exceed $5,000m, a rise of 52% over 1995 and enough to place Taiwan in first place among manufacturers of laptops, the Institute said. It blamed a relatively small 12% increase in value of output for monitors on surplus stocks. The Institute also issued a warning about plummeting international prices for CD-ROM drives.
