Tomorrow’s drivers will be able to ask their car radio for the locations of the cheapest gas stations along their route, find out information about local landmarks or even catch the latest football scores all by asking their radio for it.
The system, called SmartWeb, is being developed by experts from the Siemens Corporate Technology Division in Munich, Germany and engineers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Device Architecture and Software Technology (FIRST) in Berlin.
SmartWeb will be able to search the web for information relevant to the area the driver is in and then relay that information to the driver in natural-sounding language.
Siemens says that, although the system sounds simple, the tough part has been combining a number of distinct but sophisticated technologies into an operational whole. As a result, a mass-produced version will not be ready for around 10 years, although the prototype will on display at the forthcoming CeBIT computer trade show in Hanover.
