Tektronix Inc, Beaverton, Oregon has launched the latest version of its X server software, XpressWare version 7.0, claiming it to be the first product to provide networked digital video. XpressWare v7.0 includes a standard version of the X Imaging Extension from the new X11.6 software release, as well as a built-in facsimile imaging tool. Audio capabilities are based on Digital Equipment Corp’s CRL Audiofile. The system also includes a Tektronix implementation of Sun Microsystems Inc’s audio device driver to redirect Sun workstation audio to the X terminal, and digital video compression technology based on the MPEG broadcast standard. Analogue video technology for playback of standard television images is also available. The package is available now, with a site licence costing $500; each multimedia capability costs extra, though, and they range from AudioExpress at $200 to AVXpress – audio plus video – at $300. Tektronix has also licensed Adobe Systems Inc’s Display PostScript system and Adobe Acrobat technology for use with its new multimedia software products, including XpressWare 7.0. Under the agreement, Tektronix will offer PSXpress – a combination of Display PostScript Level 2 NX software and the Adobe Acrobat Reader – with XpressWare 7.0 server software as one of the five available software modules. PSXpress offers users access to electronic documents, graphics and images produced and stored as PostScript language or Portable Document Format files. Costing $250 per terminal, the module gives users the ability to view, navigate and print files in formats that are inherently device and resolution-independent.
