Will Telefonica de Espana SA pick SBC Communications Inc rather than GTE Corp as its strategic Latin American partner? The two are in talks to merge their Chilean companies to give them an edge in the cutthroat local market, El Mercurio reported. Telefonica owns some 43% of Chile’s largest phone company, Compania de Telecomunicaciones de Chile SA, while SBC and the local Luksic group control the much smaller VTR SA carrier. The talks are at an early stage and include all areas of business, except cable television, said the paper.
