Swedish incumbent carrier Telia AB last week unveiled a broadband wireless internet access service for business travellers. The service offered by Telia Mobile, called Telia HomeRun, is currently available at Stockholm’s main airport, as well as the central railroad stations in the capital and in Gothenburg. It will subsequently be rolled out to other stations and airports, as well as to hotels and conference centers in Sweden and abroad.
HomeRun operates via a series of nodal points, known as hot spots, through which it is possible to make a wireless connection from a portable computer to a company’s intranet or the internet. There is also an email capability, as well as access to company databases. All communications are carried out through a specially created portal site. The service is being offered to business travelers, who will receive a special card for installation in their portables for the purpose. There is no need for cables of connection via a mobile phone, the company explained.
Telia said the service presently runs at a rate of 2 Mbps, a considerable improvement on the 9.6 kbps available on mobile phone connections. The service costs users an initial SEK5,000 ($614), plus a monthly charge of SEK1,500 ($184) for unlimited usage.
