Revelations by the Chaos Computer Club of Hamburg, West Germany that members have succeeded in breaking into the Span international network that links some thousand research computers worldwide, are deeply em-barrassing to the US National Aero-nautics & Space Administration – one hacker says that he was greeted by a message saying Welcome to the NASA headquarters VAX installation – but there is as yet no indication of what action the West German authorities plan to take: the Club claims to have left Trojan Horse programs that will allow them to reenter 135 computers on the network at will, and unless proceedings are launched against the hackers – maximum penalty for breaking into computer systems is three years inside, the incident threatens to sour US-German relations.
