Attempting to increase further its claimed 40% share of the portable business computer market, Toshiba UK Ltd yesterday extended its line with topend and lowend models, describing the event as a world premiere. The T5200 and T5200/100 are 20MHz 80386 machines with 40Mb or 100Mb hard disk drives, with average access times of 29mS and 25mS respectively. Weighing in at 18.7 lbs, the machines still have built-in 1.44Mb 3.5 floppy drives, but use a 20MHz CPU against 16MHz on T5100, have 2Mb memory and take up to 8Mb on the mortherboard, add a 32Kb cache, and come with MS-DOS 3.3. The T5200/100 is UKP6,400 and arrives in November; the 40Mb model wasn’t priced, but Toshiba claims the machines will be equipped to compete with the PS/2 70 and Compaq Deskpro. The UKP3,200 batterypowered T1600 features a 12MHz 80C286 150% faster than the T1200, 1Mb to 5Mb, and weighs 11.5 lbs considered critical by Toshiba. Also running under MS-DOS 3.3, it features a built-in 20Mb hard disk and the same 3.5 floppy unit as the T5200.
