Yesterday saw UK launch of what To-shiba Corp claims to be the world’s first portable using the 80386. Its T5100 Desktop Portable 386, weighing at the same 15 lbs as the T3100/20 Portable, uses a 16MHz 80386. It features a fast 40Mb internal Winchester and 1.44Mb 3.5 microfloppy in a case measuring 12.2 by 14.2 by 3.6. The T5100 has a gas plasma display and CRT port, both IBM Colour Graphics Adaptor and Enhanced Graphics Adaptorcompatible, and boasts an IBM AT keyboard port and 230/115V AC auto switch power supply. Options include internal 2Mb extended memory and five slot expansion box. The T3200 Desktop AT is a straight desktop version of the T3100. At 18.7 lbs, it has a 12MHz 80286 CPU, built-in 40Mb Winchester with average access time of less than 38mS, and two IBM expansion slots. On to of the T3100 features, the 14.6 by 15.6 by 3.9 T3200 offers up to 4Mb RAM, built-in numeric keypad and IBM AT 101 keyboard port. Options include external 5.25 360KB floppy, and internal 3Mb extended memory board. The T5100 is UKP4,595, the T3200 at UKP3,995; the T3100/20 has been cut by 11% to UKP3,295.
