Japanese tech giant Toshiba is set to introduce the first laptop equipped with a HD-DVD drive and featuring a high resolution display for the new generation of DVD discs.
The Qosmio G30 laptop is expected to launch in Europe, Japan and the US next month.
Toshiba’s launch sees HD-DVD steal a march on the rival Blu-ray disc in the hotly contested battle to become next generation’s standard digital media format.
Both formats offer greater storage capacity than the current DVD but Blu-ray claims to offer the greater capacity potential of a dual layer disc while the HD-DVD camp contends that its discs are cheaper and compatible with the current DVD standard.
Championed by electronics giants such as Sony, Samsung Philips and Panasonic, Blu-ray disc represents a formidable opponent and HD-DVD supporters will be thankful for any advantage they can get.
