Toshiba Corp has unveiled two types of low-priced compact disk read-only-memory optical drives, undercutting existing offerings by between 15% and 35%, as well as sporting access times claimed to be two to four times faster than offerings from competing manufacturers: the new drives have interfaces for Toshiba’s own, NEC Corp’s and IBM’s personal computers, with the office version just $770, the protected factory automation one, $1,060; Toshiba thinks there’s a big market out there and hopes to sell 10,000 in the first year.
