Unisys Corp has reconfigured its top-end 1100/90 mainframes with 256K memory chips, leading to price cuts of up to 26% – but according to Electronic News, the company has a back-log for the machines, and will not be able to offer the new memories to all users until the first quarter of next year. The company has also cut maintenance on existing 1100/90s by 30% and unbundled the OS 1100 operating system. With the new memory, users will need only two cabinets for 16M-words, down from four. The 26% price cut comes on the entry-level 1100/91, which now costs $2.09m with 8M-words (of 36 bits), down from $2.81m. The dual 1100/92 is redu-ced by 23% to $3.05m with 8M-words. The four-processor 1100/94 falls 18% to $5,57m. Add-on memory, available in 8Mword modules, is 23% chea-per than its predecessor using 64K-bit chips, the new memory costing $455,000. The operating system is now $175,000 for a five-year licence.
