Vice President Al Gore announced earlier this week that the National Science Foundation is awarding $12.3m in grants to 35 research institutions across the US in order that they can connect to the vBNS very high speed Backbone Network Service, bringing the total number of research institutes connected to vBNS up to 64. Implemented by MCI Corp, the vBNS backbone is currently being updated to 622 Mbps speeds, or as the White House helpfully puts it fast enough to transmit all 30 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica in under a second.
