UUNet Technologies Inc is set to inform 12 small-to-mid-sized Internet service providers that their so-called peering rights are to be revoked, according to widespread press reports. It means that companies such as San Francisco-based Whole Earth Networks Inc, Atlanta, Georgia-based NetRail Inc and Redwood City, California-based GeoNet Communications Inc will have to begin paying UUNet for carrying their traffic, maybe as soon as from next month. The move is seen as further evidence of the gradual commercialization of the Internet, and could force some of the firms out of business.
