Topsy analyses data posted on Twitter to provide user sentiments analytics.
Apple has acquired the social media search and analytics startup Topsy Labs, which has expertise in analysing Twitter data and draw insights from it on various topics.
The company reportedly spent over $200m for the transaction, Wall Street Journal reported citing unconfirmed sources.
Topsy analyses tweets of users posted on Twitter to provide insights of the user’s current sentiments on various topics.
Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said, "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."
Apple has been acquiring smaller startups and integrating their technologies to enhance product performance, but it is still unclear where it might use Topsy’s analytic tools.
Earlier, Apple has bought the fingerprint-security providing firm AuthenTec and integrated its technology into the new iPhone 5s.
The company has also acquired the Israel-based motion-tracking technology manufacturer PrimeSense as well as navigation-software developing firm Embark.
