Speech processing systems manufacturer Votrax Inc has been awarded a $1m contract by the United States Postal Service for its voice response systems. The systems from the Troy, Michigan company will be used to provide postal information to customers via touch tone telephones – you key in your query and the appropriate spoken message is played back. Votrax will install systems in five postal regions and, to support the new service, the United States Postal Service will establish separate phone numbers listed as the Postal Answer Line, PAL, in each city where the service is implemented. The Postal Answer Line answers the telephone, provides callers with a spoken menu of choices, and asks the customer to select the type of information they wish to receive by entering codes from their telephone – but many Americans would probably prefer the Post Office to forget about such frills until it has improved its basic letter delivery service.
