Softbank and its affiliate Yahoo! Japan have launched TV Bank, a web portal that distributes TV and video content.
The portal is expected to offer a variety of content ranging from dramas and sports programs to Hollywood movies and the companies have confirmed that deals have already been struck with a number of content providers including public broadcaster NHK, BBC Worldwide and AP.
In an effort to entice users to the new site, TV Bank is offering a trial service providing free access to 16,000 videos with a further 15,000 titles accessible to paying subscribers.
The venture is reflective of the convergence of broadcasting and internet services, which is catalyzed by emerging technologies and an increasing demand for consumer-controlled entertainment.
