Even the Japanese are having to move manufacture off-shore to remain competitive, and OEM peripherals maker YE Data has begun contract manufacture of floppy disk drives in Taiwan and South Korea: it plans to continue production of higher-capacity drives of 1Mb up in Japan but will transfer production of the low-end drives to the emerging Asian economies; production will start in Taiwan by the end of the year, and next spring in South Korea; YE Data is behind the market in terms of 500Kb drives, and its sales fell markedly last year, but this fiscal year it is diversifying into Winchesters and OEM sales of laptops; it pins its hopes for a resurgence on the move off-shore, and a ramping up of 4Mb floppy drives in the 3.5 form factor.
